Tanzania sits along the East African Rift Valley, home for centuries to Maasai pastoralist communities inland and Swahili trading cities along the coast, where Arab, Persian and later European influence shaped ports such as Zanzibar and Bagamoyo. The mainland became German East Africa in the late nineteenth century, then passed to British administration as Tanganyika after the First World War.
