Understanding Kenya

Kenya History and Top Attractions

A short background on the country, followed by the places most worth building your itinerary around.

Kenya land has been home for centuries to the Maasai, Kikuyu, Luo, Kalenjin and many other communities, along with Swahili trading towns that grew along the coast through contact with Arab and Indian Ocean merchants. Britain established East Africa Protectorate in the region in 1895, later governing it as the Kenya Colony. Growing resistance, including the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s, led to independence in 1963 under Jomo Kenyatta.

In the decades since, Kenya has become one of the pioneers of organized safari tourism in Africa, building the conservation infrastructure that protects the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo today. Nairobi has grown into the largest business and travel hub in East Africa, and the country now combines world class wildlife, mountain trekking and an established Indian Ocean coastline into one of the continent most complete travel destinations.
